Praise God for Gospel clarity at the Lincoln-Southeast Sports Celebration Banquet held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center last night! Over 400 people gathered to hear former KU Basketball player and NBA Champion, Wayne Simien, testify to the substitution that had to be made in his life. He shared that among all of the fame and athletic success he found himself walking around the KU campus unfulfilled. He learned he had been substituting the glory of the immortal God with the glory of mortal man. After coming to this recognition, he understood the substitionary sacrifice Jesus Christ made on the cross. Christ took the penalty for his sin against God and gave him Christ’s own righteousness. Once repenting of his sin and believing in Christ, Wayne saw basketball as more than putting a round ball filled with air into a hoop. It was a place to worship God and a platform to proclaim the substitution that needs to take place in everyone’s life. The challenge was so clear!

Husker Basketball player, Drake Beranek, also shared his story. A story of success at the University of Nebraska-Kearney which lead to the opportunity to walk on at Nebraska. Drake shared how he was blessed to receive a scholarship and about the things he learned through this past season while playing for the Huskers. Through those circumstances his eyes were opened to how much Christ has done for him and how much of a process it is to learn how to compete and live a life for the glory of God.
Beyond the speakers, awards were handed out to a Lincoln-Southeast FCA high school and college student athlete of the year.
